What Are Theater Curtains?

It may seem like there is only one type of curtains used onstage. But interestingly enough, there are several types of theater curtains that are used. From small school plays to big Broadway musicals, there is a science behind choosing the right theater curtains.

A typical stage drape or theater curtain is produced with muslin that is flame retardant and is sewn without “fullness.” The theater curtain is hung on top with what is called a webbing, a heavy fabric that is studded with grommets (brass-colored eyelets). Metal rods or a tie line is weaved through these grommets to have the stage drape hang beautifully on stage. To provide weight and to stretch the curtain down, a pipe pocket is sown into the bottom of the theater curtain. The heavy metal rod is strewn through to put weight at the bottom of the drape.

If you are considering enhancing your stage with theater curtains, instead of using the typical velour or velvet drapes in maroon, red, navy or black, you may want to consider custom designing a print on the back drop. The scenery/picture/image can either be hand painted onto the theater curtain or it can be digitally printed onto it. If you are working with a considerable budget, you can also consider enhancing the look of your theater curtains with cleverly placed colored LED spot lights which can add onto the ambience and environment on stage.

One type of theater curtain that will help create drama on stage is the cut drop. The cut drop “frames” the main theater curtain backdrop by creating a fluid and soft border. Cut drops provide depth and texture on stage. It is also suitable in creating nice silhouettes.

Theater curtains don’t come in a standard size and aren’t bought at any department store so in order for your stage to be fitted with your desired drapes, you must have it custom made by a professional theater curtain seamstress.

Theater curtains are necessary to build that magical setting onstage so study and experiment with the different types of fabric as well as play with the layering and cinching of theater curtains to create unbelievable effects.
